The main activity of the company is the exploitation of lignite and quartz deposits.
METE S.A. “MINING – TECHNICAL – TRADE S.A.” is a Greek company based in Florina, established in 1986 by George K. Messinis ( 27 July 1947 – 7 December 2002/ Mining and Metallurgical Engineer ). The company upon its establishment aimed to the exploitation of lignite mines and has accumulated many years of experience and specialization in carrying out the necessary projects required for this purpose, such as research, study, design, earth moving, extraction and processing of lignite in its own or third party lignite mines
The company with continuous presence in lignite mining since 1986, has successfully completed more than 30 projects, achieving a cumulative production of more than 29 millions tons of lignite. Today, it stands as one of the largest private lignite mining companies in Greece, with accumulated experience in this field.
The electricity produced (more than 14 terawatt-hours [TWh]) using the cumulative quantity mined by M.E.TE. S.A. is enough to cover the electricity needs of more than 100,000 households for 20 consecutive years.
As part of its strategy to expand its product line beyond lignite mining, the company since 2016 is also active in quartz quarrying. In this framework the company has already completed more than 10 relative projects and has achieved a cumulative production and processing of more than 385,000 tons of high-quality quartz.
The headquarters of METE S.A. are located at Florina city (North Greece).The company has three branch offices, one at Prosilio lignite mine at the Prefecture of Kozani, one in Meliti quartz quarry, at the Prefecture of Florina and one in Chalandri region, at the Prefecture of Attika (Athens) . The shareholders of the company are members of Stamatoula Messini family.
METE S.A. has been certified by TUV Austria in accordance with standards EN ISO 9001:2015 for the design, extraction, crushing, sorting and delivery of lignite deposits, according to standards EN ISO 14001:2015 for its environmental management system and according to standards ISO 45001:2018 concerning its management system on health and safety at work.
All company staff are experienced and have excellent knowledge of the nature of the tasks required of the execution of the tasks undertaken, as it consists of employees who have been working for the company for more than 25 years . Currently, the company employs more than 100 staff under directly depended employment and, including its partners (subcontractors), it employs more than 150 people in its projects in the Prefectures of Florina and Kozani. The staff of METE S.A include experienced Mining Engineers, Chemical Engineers, Foremen, and Machinery Maintainers and Operators, Drivers and Workers with years of experience in the exploitation conditions and characteristics of lignite mines in the area of the Prefecture of FLORINA, and specifically in the lignite mines of VEVI, ACHLADA and AMYNTAIO of VEGORA. The company is also staffed with a group of economists and an organized legal service.
The primary objectives of each project undertaken by the company is to provide timely, effective, efficient execution, to ensure the safety of exploitation operations and the optimization of production at every stage with respect for the environment and social sensitivity. The company’s social responsibility is currently acknowledged by both the Prefectures of Florina and Kozani, as the company for more than 30 years has contributed in many ways to improve the living conditions in the areas where it operates. The company’s contribution includes the following:
• Recruitment of the majority of staff from areas that are adjacent to its projects.
• Construction and maintenance of roads at the expense of the company, in order to render them safer for the company’s operations and for all other users (residents, travelers, etc).
• Construction of works needed by the residents of neighboring areas (football field, transport and delivery of plantation soil to farmers, water supply-irrigation pipes, etc).

Integrated Management System of Quality, Environment, Health & Safety at Work Policy (H.S.W.)
The company, in view of the production of lignite and the provision of services meeting the requirements of its customers, its respect for humans and the environment, recognizing the need for development and adoption of productive procedures which are safe and environmental friendly, aiming at a balanced economic development in harmony with nature, has decided to establish and operate an Integrated Management System (IMS) according to the requirements of standards EN ISO 9001:2015, EN ISO 14001:2015, EN ISO 45001:2018. The approach of quality, environment and H.S.W. is a consistent and strictly defined procedure ensuring the guarantees for consistent presence at the sector in which it is active. Following a course of sustainable development, the company seeks continuous quality improvement of its products, combining the wise and rational use of natural recourses and the minimization of the negative impact of its activities on the environment and H.S.W.
