METE SA from January 2002 until August 2010 had the exclusive contractual exploitation of the Public Mine of Achlada (which is leased from the Greek State to a private company) and implemented all the coal supply contracts of lignite of the above mine to PPC SA (Public Power Corporation) and to any third party for the above mentioned period. The company with its works covered up to 100% the needs of the Steam Thermopower Plant of Meliti of PPC SA in the area of Florina in fuel (lignite), by successfully organizing all the relevant necessary extraction and logistics activities for the delivery of 2,5 to 3 million tons of lignite per year.
Since 2016, the company, by investing significant funds mainly in electromechanical equipment is active in the field of quartz exploitation in the Meliti area, in the Prefecture of Florina. The production capacity of the above quarry is expected to exceed ninety thousand tons (90,000 M.T.) of quartz per year.
Since June 2005, METE SA restarted the operation of the Lignite Mine of Prosilio and supplied with lignite the company “LARCO” GMM SA with quantities of more than one hundred fifty thousand tons (150,000 M.T.) per year. Today, from the lignite mine it supplies companies (in Greece and abroad) with quantities of lignite exceeding two hundred thousand tons (200,000 M.T.) per year.
METE S.A. following closely the developments in the Balkans in the energy sector, through its subsidiary established in Bitola, is expanding in the lignite mining sector and the mining of other industrial minerals in general. At the same time, METE SA is currently conducting surveys for the identification of areas with quartz deposits and other industrial and metallic minerals in Northern Greece.
The company, in the framework of the expansion of its know-how and expertise, for the first time in Greece, in the field of exploitation of lignite mines, is pilotically attempting the simultaneous application of the methods of open pit mining and underground mining exploitation. The success of the afore mentioned project aims to ensure:
I) the maximization of the recovery rate of the lignite deposit in the Prosilio lignite mine and of any other lignite mine that may fulfill the conditions for the application of the method. The success of the project will make feasible the exploitation of lignite deposits that due to their high extraction costs, were considered to be uneconomic and non-exploitable.
II) the minimization of the environmental impact of the lignite mining activity.
