M.E.TE. S.A. (“Metallurgical – Commercial – Technical Societe Anonyme”) is a Greek company based in Florina, founded in 1986 by George K. Messinis (July 27, 1947 – December 7, 2002 / Mining and Metallurgical Engineer). Main activity of the company is the exploitation of lignite and quartz deposits.
The company upon its establishment aimed to the exploitation of lignite mines and has accumulated many years of experience and specialization in carrying out the necessary tasks required for this purpose such as research, study, design, overburden removal, extraction and processing of lignite of tis own or third party lignite mines and today it stands as one of the largest private lignite mining companies in Greece, with 38 years of accumulated experience in this field, 38 years, more than 30 projects and more than 29 millions tons of lignite.
The company aims to the efficient and effective exploitation of the minerals, contributing to industry and the Economy of Greece. METE S.A. following closely the developments in the Balkans in the energy sector and through its subsidiary established in Bitola, the company has been expanding in the lignite mining sector and the mining of other industrial minerals in general. At the same time, METE SA is currently conducting surveys for the identification of areas with quartz deposits and other industrial and metallic minerals in Northern Greece.
The company, in the framework of the expansion of its know-how and expertise, for the first time in Greece, in the field of exploitation of lignite mines, is pilotically attempting the simultaneous application of the methods of open pit ming and underground mining exploitation. The success of the afore mentioned project will ensure:
I) the maximization of the recovery rate of the lignite deposit in the Prosilio lignite mine and of any other lignite mine that may fulfill the conditions for the application of the method. The success of the project will make feasible the exploitation of lignite deposits that due to their high extraction costs, were considered to be uneconomic and non-exploitable.
II) the minimization of the environmental impact of lignite mining activity.
-Sustainable effort to reduce the adverse impact of the company’s activities to the environment.
– Full application of the relevant Greek and European Community legislation, as well as, of any other environmental requirements
-Contol of the manufacturing means and procedures in order to ensure the effectiveness of environmental protection measures.
-Design and operation of facilites by taking into account the minimization of environmental impact and the energy efficiency with a view to preserve natural resources.
The electrical energy produced (more than 14 Terawatt Hours [TWh]), using the cumulative quantity of lignite mined by M.E.T.E. S.A., is enough for the electricity needs of more than 100,000 households for 20 consecutive years.
